Frequently Asked Questions

Sanitizer has always been available throughout the store for customer use. If you wish to handle a bird, we insist that you have clean hands. You will either need to use the available sanitizer or use the restroom to wash your hands. If you are unwilling to do either, then you will not be able to handle a bird. Even if you use own your sanitizer before you enter the store, your hands are no longer clean as you touched the door of your car to close it and the handle of the door to enter the store.

No. The H5N1 bird flu has been detected in some cattle and backyard poultry flocks, but has not been found in any pet stores in Arizona. There was a brief issue with it at the Wildlife World Zoo in the west valley where a few mammals, birds, and a staff member were infected. As far as we can tell by the information provided by Maricopa COunty Health Department is has not been detected in parrots in Arizona.

The county health department advises that you not touch any dead birds you may find outside. If you are concerned for the safety of your parrots, do not take them outside where they may be exposed to wild birds.

We take pride in maintaining a safe and clean environment for customers, employees, and all of the birds that stay here. Every cage, and food dish that a bird uses is cleaned with a pet safe disinfectant every single day. However, we can only be responsible for what happens within our facility. To prevent the possibility of an illness entering the store and spreading between customers bird, we require that all birds have a yearly wellness exam. Birds are notorious for hiding an illness and by the time you notice a bird is ill, it is usually too late to save them. Vets are trained to spot diseases in their early stages so this gives us one more layer of protection against diseases coming into our facility.

We are not trained in veterinarian care, and it's best to let the professionals help you. While it used to be possible to purchase some simple antibiotics for birds, many of those products are no longer available, or can only be obtained from a vets office. We recommend the Arizona Exotic Animal Hospital. You can find them at the link below.
